From Instagram to LinkedIn: Why Critical Digital Awareness Matters

An introduction to a research project exploring attention, identity and credibility across digital platforms without presenting unverified findings.

Digital platforms are not used in identical ways, and the messages appearing on them do not receive equal levels of attention or scrutiny. Between Instagram and LinkedIn, several questions emerge: what do we see, why did this content appear, how do we interpret success or expertise, and when do we mistake reach for credibility?

The project From Instagram to LinkedIn approaches these questions through critical digital awareness. Its purpose is not to condemn platforms or demand withdrawal from them. It is to examine the relationship between digital design, user behaviour, self-perception and knowledge.

One area concerns the attention economy: how viewing time, engagement and browsing become meaningful signals within a platform environment. Another relates to selective presentation and professional identity. A published life is not necessarily a complete life, and visible achievements do not always reveal the surrounding circumstances, challenges or opportunities.

Credibility presents another question. Do we treat a widely followed person as an expert? Do we return to the original source before sharing an appealing claim? As generative artificial intelligence becomes more visible, the origin of content, the role of review and responsibility for its claims become increasingly important considerations.

This article introduces the intellectual direction of the project. It does not announce field results, percentages or statistical conclusions before they have been reviewed and approved. Distinguishing a research question from a published finding is part of the academic integrity guiding TAS.

Critical digital awareness does not begin with fear of technology. It begins with a modest habit: pausing to examine what we encounter before believing it, sharing it or using it to make a decision.
